These are also called Preacher Cookies. Why? It's said that "years ago when preachers made a practice of calling on members of their congregation at home (usually unexpectedly), these cookies were a treat that ladies could prepare quickly with ingredients that they most always had on hand. These treats could be on the table in a flash."
