Hi, I’m Carolyn, the baker behind Stone & Starter Sourdough.
I bake small-batch sourdough bread using simple, traditional ingredients and methods.
I’m also a registered nurse working in post-operative cardiac surgery. Attention to detail and consistency are essential here and I bring these values into every loaf I bake.
I’ve spent the past year refining my sourdough recipe and truly enjoy sharing fresh, homemade bread with my local community.
Thank you for supporting local, I look forward to baking for you 😊
Why is sourdough easier to digest?
Sourdough is naturally fermented, which helps break down gluten and complex carbohydrates. Many people find it gentler on the stomach than regular bread.
Slow fermentation can improve mineral absorption, making nutrients like iron, zinc, and magnesium easier for your body to absorb.
What ingredients are in your sourdough bread?
Only simple ingredients: flour, filtered water, sea salt, and a well maintained sourdough starter
Do you use commercial yeast or preservatives?
No, my bread contains no commercial yeast or preservatives. Although, store bought sourdough usually does contain commercial yeast as the leaving agent
How is your sourdough made?
Each loaf is handcrafted in small batches and slowly fermented over two days for better flavour, texture, and digestibility.
Is your bread made locally?
Yes! each loaf is handcrafted in small batches in Fergus and baked fresh before delivery within the community.
How long is the bread good for?
Sourdough is best enjoyed within 3–4 days at room temperature but can last longer. You can keep it sealed in the bag provided. For even longer storage, slice the loaf, place parchment paper between slices, and freeze for up to 2–3 months.
I’m having a hard time cutting the bread- what should I do?
Fresh sourdough can be tricky to slice the same day it’s baked. It’s best to wait until the next day for easier cutting.
A great way to slice is to cut the loaf in half, place the cut side down, and slice from there for more stability.
If you’d prefer, I’m happy to slice it for you for $2, just keep in mind that it may dry out a bit faster once sliced.
What type of sourdough do you offer?
I currently focus on a classic sourdough loaf, made to be versatile and enjoyed by everyone-perfect for toast, sandwiches, or fresh with butter. I may offer additional flavours from time to time in the future.
Can you slice the bread for me?
Yes, I’m happy to slice your bread for you for $2 if you’re having trouble. I do recommend keeping the loaf whole, as it stays fresh longer. Sliced bread may lose freshness a bit faster, but it’s a great option if you plan to freeze it or enjoy it sooner.
Can I order bread every week?
Yes! Many customers order weekly so they always have fresh bread on hand. You can place an order each week through this page, or I’m happy to offer simple biweekly or monthly plans if that’s easier for you.
