The Story Behind Fancy Schmancy Bakehouse

Fancy Schmancy Bakehouse was born from a moment of grumpiness and whimsy—a phrase lovingly remembered from when our daughter, Bella, was just three years old. After being called “crusty” while out shopping, she defiantly declared, “I not crusty, I fancy schmancy!” That unforgettable line became a symbol of her unique spirit—bold, playful, and yes, sometimes crusty.

Recently, in the wake of unimaginable grief after losing Bella, I began making sourdough recipes using her Kitchen Aid mixer. What started as a way to soothe my heart soon became something more—a creative outlet, a connection to Bella, and a spark of purpose. Inspired by Bella’s fancy schmancy declaration, the bakehouse became a way to honor her memory with elegance, whimsy, and love baked into every loaf and cookie.

The micro-bakery reflects Bella’s personality—part sass, part sparkle, and entirely unforgettable. And as my daughter Shelly noted, sourdough is the perfect symbol of her crusty and fancy schmancy personality!

The bakehouse operates as a part-time passion project under Minnesota’s cottage food law, with pre-order sales and occasional fundraisers that support causes close to my heart, like The Beautiful Life Project and Fentanyl Free Communities Foundation.
