Hello! Ordering is currently paused while I’m on maternity leave.
Please head over to my Facebook page, Benton St Breads, for updates on how you can still get your bread goodies.
Thank you so much for your support!
Sourdough has several health benefits that make it a popular choice for many:
1. **Easier to Digest**: The fermentation process breaks down gluten and phytic acid, making sourdough easier to digest than other breads.
2. **Lower Glycemic Index**: Sourdough has a lower glycemic index than regular bread, meaning it doesn't cause rapid spikes in blood sugar, which is beneficial for those managing blood sugar levels.
3. **Probiotics**: The natural fermentation process encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria (lactic acid bacteria), which can improve gut health and digestion.
4. **Rich in Nutrients**: Sourdough is a good source of essential minerals, including magnesium, iron, and zinc. The fermentation process helps release these minerals, making them more bioavailable.
5. **Better for Heart Health**: Some studies suggest that the fermentation process may reduce the levels of compounds like phytic acid, which can interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients, such as iron and zinc. This could potentially contribute to better heart health over time.
6. **Longer Shelf Life**: Thanks to its natural acidity and fermentation, sourdough has a longer shelf life than other bread, making it less likely to mold.
7. **Unique Flavor**: The tangy flavor from natural fermentation adds a depth of taste that can make sourdough bread a more satisfying choice for many people.
These benefits make sourdough not just a flavorful option, but also a healthier one compared to more processed bread types.
How long will my bread be fresh?
Fresh bread will generally stay fresh at room temperature for about 2-4 days, but this can vary depending on factors like humidity and the temperature in your home. If you want to extend its shelf life, storing it in the fridge can keep it fresh for about a week or more. However, it's worth noting that refrigeration can change the texture of some breads, making them a bit denser or drier. If you want to preserve bread for longer periods, freezing it is a great option!
What does sourdough taste like?
The taste of sourdough is unique and complex, characterized by a subtle tanginess that comes from the natural fermentation process. This tanginess can range from mild to more pronounced, depending on how long the dough has fermented. The flavor is also slightly nutty, with a depth that comes from the combination of wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria. The crust adds a bit of crispness and a slightly savory, roasted flavor, while the crumb is typically soft and mildly sweet. Overall, sourdough offers a balance of tang, earthiness, and mild sweetness, making it more flavorful and robust compared to other types of bread.
Can you slice my bread for me?
Unfortunately, I cannot slice the bread for you due to Wisconsin Cottage Food laws. Slicing the bread would be considered 'food service,' which requires a special license. I appreciate your understanding!
