The Spirit in the Green: The Symbolism and Spirituality of Appalachian Christmas Decorations

A Root & Thread Folk Learning Class

Step into the warmth of the season and rediscover the meaning woven through our mountain holiday traditions. In this hands-on class, we’ll explore the old Appalachian symbolism behind evergreens, oranges, cranberries, and handmade ornaments — uncovering how these simple decorations once served as charms of protection, renewal, and gratitude.

Through storytelling, reflection, and craft, you’ll learn how early mountain families celebrated the return of light and life in winter’s darkest days. Each participant will create two make-and-take projects — such as a clove-studded orange pomander, dried orange and cranberry garland, or evergreen blessing bundle — infused with personal intention and folk meaning.

We’ll close with a candle blessing for hearth and home, leaving you with a deeper understanding of the season’s spirit and handmade beauty to carry into your own traditions.

Includes: all materials, storytelling session, take-home symbolism guide, and herbal cider to share.
